Skye Ose basket
Willow variety Black Maul (Stripped).
Replica of the Ose basket at the Skye Museum of Island Life, produced at the Kilmuir basket factory (operating 1908-9 to 1956) for the Highland Home Industries. The Skye basket is created using skeined white willow, an endangered basketry skill.
Having in 2022 visited the museum to examine this basket, Sarah was asked to create a replica for the Basketry: Rescuing, Reviving, Retaining exhibition being held 2024 - 25 at Ruthin Craft Centre, Denbighshire and the Harley Foundation, Nottinghamshire. This exhibition forms part of the continued work of the Basketmakers' Association's Traditional Basketry Project supported by the The Worshipful Company of Basketmakers and delivered in partnership with Heritage Crafts.
The Ose basket, also known as a Skye, Hen, Gondola, Brigitte Bardot or Gathering basket, has been documented across Europe since Medieval times. With its unusual structure in which the pouch of the basket forms the handle, the Ose basket has been made in many sizes and for a multitude of purposes, all created by weaving around several main hoops and ribs. During this time the Ose shifted from poultry basket to shopping basket to iconic fashion accessory.
Sarah’s Skye Ose basket replica is being exhibited at the Basketry: Rescuing, Reviving, Retaining exhibition alongside her contemporary interpretation of an Ose basket in indigo & white willow. 2024.
