Large rectangular storage baskets, perfect for living rooms and playrooms, made using traditional English techniques. Using willow grown on my local Somerset Levels, these baskets lended themselves to brown willow, that lightly steamed, created a mottled effect that accentuated the textures of the different traditional english rand weaves. Known as Stake & Strand square work baskets, Sarah deliberately makes only using English methods and techniques in the staking up, bordering and in the weaves. In recent years in the UK our surviving basketmakers have often been taught only continental methods, and whilst this maybe for ease, (you have to have a decent amount of body strength to use the English staking up method!) this has resulted in few basketmakers now knowing how to, or wanting to use traditional English methods.
