Having replicated in white willow a bird cage from the Coates English Willow Museum, I studied elements of a bird cage found in the Museum of English Rural Life and then chose to create my collection of ultimate bird cages complete with birds inside.
-
Originally these large willow cages were hung outside cottage doors. Often home to blackbirds, their occupants song acted as a rural alarm clock and doorbell!
-
These bird cages enabled me to bring my sculptural background to the fore, creating miniature willow blackbirds, robins and house martins to live in. Each cage contained willow birds, a swing and some even have a traditional worm feeding perch!
