Fine Arts & Crafts ebonised chair, attributed to influential Arts & Crafts designer E W Godwin, rush seat.
This elegant and delicate chair has been finely rush seated by myself, using rush that I have locally harvested from the Somerset Levels. It seems natural to me to now explore rush seating, made popular by the Arts & Crafts movement and rush seat this c.1880's chair.
With my mum's tuition, who was a cane and rush seater as well as an incredible upholsterer, I am hoping that I will be able to take on techniques that I require to be able to proficiently rush original Arts & Crafts furniture. This chair is my first rush seating project and although I attempted an incredibly fine rush weave I am pleased with the result. Similar chairs can be found that were designed by E W Godwin and illustrated in William Watt's Art Furniture 1877 catalogue and also in the Heal & Son's 1884 catalogue. (Being a study piece, this chair is not for sale).
