Willow and rush combine to make this unique and practical backpack.
Designed and handwoven by myself in brown and natural white willow with a rush lid, fastening and strap detail. Both materials are sourced / harvested by myself from my local Somerset Levels.
(Size, w38cm x h38cm x d18cm)

Inspired by a 1930's pharmaceutical bottle basket in the Coates English Willow museum in Somerset. I've chosen to cinch in the basket waist for a more bodice like look and comfort and use colour variation to show off the traditional English rand weave.

A twill check weave rush lid offers practicality whilst plaited rush straps can be adjusted to the wearer.

This backpack fitted perfectly into the Scottish highland scenery where these photos were taken on the shores of the magical Loch Awe.
Designed in July 2020, having used this backpack daily, I have received numerous complements about both it's beauty and uniqueness.

Spotted in the Coates English Museum in Somerset, this c 1935 pharmaceutical bottle basket was used by the company May & Baker to carry their chemicals, possibly including chloroform, ethers, iodides and camphor!
Thank you as ever to Coates English Willow for their inspiration and passion for keeping our nation's willow heritage and commercial willow growing alive.
